Background:
Erica Sugar, in her 30's, decided to box, solely as a means to cross
train for running, which at the time was her first passion.
She had no intention of getting in the ring.
Erica was an avid runner and ran in many local races, placing in several
of them. She ran and completed the Marine Corps Marathon in Washington
D.C. in 4 hours 33 minutes. (She even managed to beat Al Gore's time
by 30 minutes!)
As Erica trained in the gym, a trainer at the gym, noticed that she had
some potential for the sport and approached her. Erica still was not
convinced and it took a little more than gentle persuasion before
she decided to try it out. To her amazement, she loved it!
Erica said, "I loved the intensity of it and loved the training as
well. Now running is done as a means to cross train for
boxing!" Erica still has her love for running, but cannot do
the distance running as much as it's not conducsive to boxing
training. Erica did say that, "now and then I get in a long
run."
Erica has now been training for one and one-half years, and just had
her pro debut on July 21, 2000, defeating her first opponent, Bonnie
Wherry with a TKO in the fourth round on an ESPN2 card.
