Jessica Rakoczy, 134, of Las Vegas, stopped
Mia "The
Knockout" St. John, 137, in the second round. An insider
said that Mia had received a headbutt, but the ref ruled it a TKO.
David Avila wrote the following: Mia, the brunette fighter
known as “the Knockout” suffered a severe cut to her left eye during her
fight against Jessica Rakoczy. A clash of heads between the two
lightweights opened a cut below her eyebrow right over the eye. Blood
was dripping into her eye and that’s not good when you’re facing one of
the best fighters in the world Pound for Pound. Though the ringside
physician allowed the fight to continue after the second round ended,
St. John’s corner person and former lightweight stalwart Fredia Gibbs
told her friend not to go out again. “Fredia was looking out for me. She
told me the cut was too bad,” said St. John, who says Gibbs is her best
friend. “I trust Fredia to watch out for me and she did. It’s always
good to have someone in your corner who doesn’t care about the money,
someone you can trust.” A visit to a doctor in Northern California
resulted in 27 stitches and a startling revelation. “The doctor
told me if I had been hit more on that cut I would have been coming in
for surgery, not just stitches,” St. John said. “She said the cut was
clear down to the muscle and could have permanently damaged my eye.”
St. John shudders at the thought that her eyesight was endangered, but
she still wants to fight.
“I plan to come back next month,” she said. “If the doctors says it’s
OK, then I’ll fight. But if they say it’s not healed I’ll postpone it.”
Thinking back on the fight with Rakoczy, St. John is grateful Gibbs
convinced her to stop the fight.
“People think it was the ringside doctor who stopped the fight. But it
was really Fredia who stopped the fight,” St. John said. “Can you
imagine if I had gone back out against Jessica? She is so accurate with
her punches I really believe my eye would have been much worse.”
And about the fight in general, St. John said, “Jessica Rakoczy is the
best fighter in the world.”

At the HP Pavillion in San

brawl. Joy "seek & destoy" Irvin (130 lbs., 6-0 6KOs)
looked to stamp KO number 7 on Mia " the knockout" St. Johns
(136lbs., 39-4-2 16 KOs) head. It was bombs away from the
beginning. Mia weathered a storm of punches before unleashing
some bombs of her own at the end of the first round to let Joy
know that "fights on". After instructions between rounds Mia was
up and ready for the second round. She used her experience to
score with punches inside Joys' bombs before throwing her own
bombs, then took advantage of a fighter lacking in defensive
skills. Joy was hurt & defenseless twice before the referee
rightly stopped the fight at 44 seconds of the second round.

Yolanda fell awkwardly to the canvas, falling on her arm.
Swindell told WBAN, "Up untill that point, it was a very

October 23, 2004 - Maywood, California (report by David Avila of
Maxboxing.com)
They fought just a week ago but a lot can change in seven days.
Mia St. John and
Janae Archuleta met for the second time in a week with the same
result, but the tempo increased before more than 1,200 at the Maywood
Activity Center. "She was different this time," said Archuleta.. "She was a
lot more aggressive." St. John attacked cautiously at first as she
stuck the jab repeatedly before Archuleta could get off a punch. It was the
basic theme for all four rounds with St. John beating Archuleta to the
punch. But in the second round, left hooks and right hands powered through
Archuleta's guard. "She was real strong in this fight," Archuleta
(4-9-1) said of St. John. "I felt I hit her with some good right hands, but
she was a lot more aggressive in this fight." Perhaps because she was
fighting locally for the first time in almost four years, St. John seemed to
bite down harder on her mouthpiece and put together some powerful
combinations. Several times it looked as if Archuleta was about to fold. But
she didn't. "She's a really tough girl that's why I like to fight
her," said St. John who has fought Archuleta several times. "She won't quit.
I hit her hard a couple of times and she just stood there. It got me mad."
St. John was angry because she felt a knockout was within reach but
Archuleta fought back with some solid right hands. But each time they
exchanged, St. John's punches reached first. In the third round, St.
John could not miss with a left hand whether it was a jab or a short left
hook. In the fourth it was right hands that repeatedly found the mark.
"She always comes to fight. She won't lay down for anybody," said St. John
who fights again on Nov. 6 in Louisiana then on Dec. 3 in Tucson, Arizona.
"I was cautious at first because I don't want to get cut before my title
belt." Scheduled to face Puerto Rico's Belinda Laracuente for the WIBA
lightweight world title, the brunette bombshell was almost too eager to end
the fight early. "I had more aggression in this fight," St. John
(37-4-2) said, adding that each fight brings her closer to winning a world
title. Robert Garcia, St. John's trainer and a former junior
lightweight world champion, said his student has improved remarkably in the
last two years. "If you saw her against Christy Martin you could see
how much she improved. She's a good student and a good listener," said
Garcia. "She gets better and better."
St. John said she plans to beat Laracuente, who gave Martin a tough scrap
five years ago in losing by decision. "I'm going to beat her," said
St. John. "Then after I win the title I'm going to fight Lucia Rijker.
People say I just want to win the title and fight nobodies. Lucia is not a
nobody."

reported that St. John "cruised" to a third round stoppage over the very
game Yanas. St. John used her jab early in the game and wore Yanas down.
St. John then proceeded to shoot of a barrage of combinations that made
the ref stop the fight. In the Cruz vs. Brown match, Cruz got
caught with by a wide-right hook that hit it's mark, followed by another
right hook and reported to have been to the back of the head, followed
by an uppercut, in which was the time that fight was stopped.

Mia St. John, 36, won a four-round unanimous
decision over Jessica Mohs. ESPN commentators pulled
"few" punches in what was described by them as a lackluster four-round bout.
This four-rounder made television. Mohs took the fight on short notice. All
judges scored the bout 40-36. The show
was
co-promoted by George Chung's American Champion
Sports and Top Rank. St. John improved her record to 28-3-1 (13 KO),
and Mohs fell to 5-10-0 (1 KO).

Mia St. John, 135.5 vs. Jenifer Alcorn, 135
Mia
entered the ring first---included in her corner was Fredia “the
Cheetah” Gibbs and Mia’s mother. Alcorn made her appearance
shortly thereafter, with trainer/husband working her corner.
Both boxers appeared to be relaxed and ready to fight….In the
first round, Alcorn and Mia wasted little time in mixing it up
and the fight turned into a slugfest. Within about 20 seconds
into the fight, Mia slipped to the canvas, and it looked like
Alcorn was over-powering Mia at that time. (Mpeg of the slip
on records site,
gallery 51). In the second round, Alcorn and Mia
continued to fight toe-to-toe, but in the later part of the
round, Alcorn was throwing multiple combination and caught Mia
in the corner. Mia weathered out the 2nd round, and
did not appear to be hurt from the attack. (Mpeg on Records
site of 60 seconds of the 2nd round,
gallery 51). Most
of the rest of the rounds was a slugfest between the two with
Alcorn ultimately winning with a unanimous decision. Alcorn
remains undefeated with a 16-0-0 (10KO), and St. John is now 27-3-1
(13KO). Final judges scores was 78-74, 77-75, and 77-75. WBAN
asked St. John how she felt about this fight with Alcorn in a
post-fight interview. St. John said, “Out of my 31 fights this
was probably my favorite fight aside from Christy. Fighting
Jenifer was such a challenge and truly a wonderful experience.
The crowd was on their feet the whole time and found it as
exciting as I did. The fight was an overall success! I went
into
Fresno
sparked a little controversy, we sold A LOT of tickets and
fought our hearts out. My job is complete. I couldn't be
happier. I'll be fighting again in June and hopefully will
rematch with Christy sometime this summer.”

Pontiac Silverdome, in Detroit, Michigan
Christy
Martin, 144, won a 10-round decision over Mia St. John,
140 1/4. St. John
gets an "A+" for effort, as she hung in there and it was
obvious that she trained very hard for the fight. If St.
John did not have boxing fans before the fight, she absolutely
gained some after the fight. Martin could not take Mia out, like
most predicted, and Mia took some punishing body shots---not missing
a beat. Final scoring of the fight was 97-93, 97-93,
99-91.

Surprise...Surprise...as
"Gomer Pyle" would say....on the undercard in an
"untelevised" four-rounder, Mia St. John (now
26-1-1) stopped her now 1-3-1 opponent Elisa
Olivas in the third round....

EDITORIAL BY TL FOX
Last night at the Silver Star
Casino, in Choctaw, Mississippi, Mia St. John apparently scooted by with
winning a controversial majority decision over a brand new woman boxer who
was reported to have a 2-0-0 record as a pro with an amateur background,
Kristy Follmar. (WBAN has Follmar's record at 1-0-0 with her only
win as a pro fighting Yvonne Sidney out of Wisconsin. (News sources (Fightnews.com)
reported that St. John "escaped with an unexplainable majority
decision". The crowd booed loudly at the unbelievable
decision, of 39-37, 39-37, and 38-38.

January 18, 2002 - Raleigh, North Carolina
On ESPN2 and in Raleigh, North Carolina, Gina Greenwald, 129.5
lbs., fought out of weight class with 145 lb. Mia St. John. Greenwald
managed to put on 4 1/2 lbs., and St. John took off eight pounds (since
yesterday folks), and the two fought a four rounder. For Greenwald fighting
totally out of weight class and being over-matched, she held her own for the
duration of the fight, but it was not enough and St. John won by a unanimous
decision. Amazing as it may seem, at the end of the fight, St. John said to
the TV cameras, "Hey, Christy Martin." It is absolutely obvious,
to not only boxing fans, WBAN, and anyone that has 20-20 vision, that St.
John should not get within a football field of the "Coal Miner’s
Daughter." Fat paycheck or not, this fight would be nothing more than a
farce on the public---End of Story. Final scorecards of this fight was 40-35
by all judges. Greenwald fell to 2-6. St. John is now 23-1-1. This was an
unbelievably poor matchup---and there was no honor in defeating a fighter
out of weight class, and a fighter with a 2 win record. Shame on the
matchmaker(s) of this fight. Shame on the North Carolina boxing
commission for approving the match up. Shame on ESPN2 for even having the
fight on their card. Shame on Greenwald’s team for allowing her to fight
out of weight class, and lastly, Shame on Mia St. John’s team for taking
advantage of an inferior and out-of-weight-class opponent. Sue TL Fox
