Jessica Rakoczy, 134, of Las Vegas, stopped  Mia "The Knockout" St. John, 137,  in the second round.  An insider said that Mia had received a headbutt, but the ref ruled it a TKO.  David Avila wrote the following:  Mia, the brunette fighter known as “the Knockout” suffered a severe cut to her left eye during her fight against Jessica Rakoczy.  A clash of heads between the two lightweights opened a cut below her eyebrow right over the eye. Blood was dripping into her eye and that’s not good when you’re facing one of the best fighters in the world Pound for Pound. Though the ringside physician allowed the fight to continue after the second round ended, St. John’s corner person and former lightweight stalwart Fredia Gibbs told her friend not to go out again. “Fredia was looking out for me. She told me the cut was too bad,” said St. John, who says Gibbs is her best friend. “I trust Fredia to watch out for me and she did. It’s always good to have someone in your corner who doesn’t care about the money, someone you can trust.”  A visit to a doctor in Northern California resulted in 27 stitches and a startling revelation.  “The doctor told me if I had been hit more on that cut I would have been coming in for surgery, not just stitches,” St. John said. “She said the cut was clear down to the muscle and could have permanently damaged my eye.”  St. John shudders at the thought that her eyesight was endangered, but she still wants to fight. “I plan to come back next month,” she said. “If the doctors says it’s OK, then I’ll fight. But if they say it’s not healed I’ll postpone it.”  Thinking back on the fight with Rakoczy, St. John is grateful Gibbs convinced her to stop the fight.  “People think it was the ringside doctor who stopped the fight. But it was really Fredia who stopped the fight,” St. John said. “Can you imagine if I had gone back out against Jessica? She is so accurate with her punches I really believe my eye would have been much worse.”  And about the fight in general, St. John said, “Jessica Rakoczy is the best fighter in the world.”

WBAN’s Jessica Trevino reported that the Melissa Del Valle – Shakura Witherspoon did not take place, and that even though it had been reduced to an exhibition, due to the difference in weight, the exhibition was scratched off the card.  Del Valle said that she will be fighting Rakoczy on September 16th for a title fight.

In front of about 1,200 boxing fans, in the semi-main event,
Jessica Rakoczy  of Las Vegas, won an eight-round unanimous decision over Gloria Ramirez.. Steve Cummings of inthecorner.net covered the fight ringside and reported the following:  Rakoczy's win over Ramirez saw the IBA champ win seven of eight rounds against a southpaw who employed a lot of movement. The lefty stance and side-to-side work of Ramirez appeared to keep Rakoczy from getting off to her customary fast start, though Jessica pressed forward constantly. Over the first two rounds, Ramirez landed her left often but it didn't have the steam on it like the shots she got back. Meanwhile, Gloria's punches were mostly one at a time while Jessica would move into position and throw combinations when the time was right.  Rounds three and four saw Rakoczy (15-1, 4 KO's) get in her best power shots and Ramirez' face started to show some swelling. The pattern continued through the sixth round, Rakoczy coming forward, Ramirez (9-13-5, 1 KO) using lateral movement looking to counter. In each frame Jessica would let loose with both hands when in range, and then continue stalking until another opportunity arose.  The last two rounds were Ramirez' best, as she finished off the seventh with her best exchange to that point. She answered a Rakoczy attack with her customary left hand shot and when the two battled on the inside, Gloria let loose with an uppercut that found the mark. As the round wound down, Ramirez gave as good as she got, though she didn't win the round.  Ramirez did win the eighth, however, as she came out more aggressively and landed clean shots with consistency. I had it 79-73 for Rakoczy, as did two of the judges. The third judge saw it as a shutout for Jessica, 80-72.

Jessica Rakoczy, 135,  won a 10-round unanimous decision over Lisa “Lil Warrior” Lewis and is now the new IBA Lightweight World Champion.  Steve Cummings of InTheCorner.net reported the following:  “Jessica Rakoczy returned to the ring Thursday night after a 13-month layoff that included an auto accident that left her unable to fight. If there were any questions about how Jessica would be able to recover from the layoff and injury, there aren’t anymore. Rakoczy put on a dazzling display of skills against Lisa Lewis at The Palace Indian Gaming Center in
Lemoore, CA to notch a unanimous 10-round decision and win the IBA lightweight championship.  The Rakoczy-Lewis matchup was the main event of the Hard Road To Glory show that also saw a victory by rising junior welterweight star Oscar Diaz in the co-main event. George Chung’s American Champion Sports and The Palace promoted the seven-bout show.  Rakoczy (13-1) finally made her ring return after suffering her first loss to Jenifer Alcorn in January of 2003 and came out of her corner with both guns blazing. A powerful right hand in the early going knocked Lewis (6-8) sideways before she landed on the canvas. Lewis got up from her first professional knockdown but Rakoczy was back to the attack immediately. The second round saw Jessica tag Lisa with a powerful right hand that hurt the Fresno fighter. As the round wore on, however, Lewis started to find her way inside the long arms of Rakoczy to at least stem the tide of powerful shots that had been steady since the opening bell. For the duration of the fight, Lewis worked diligently to get inside while Rakoczy did her level best to keep her opponent on the end of her long-range power shots. While Lewis was able to close the gap better as the fight wore on, Rakoczy’s skills were just too sharp and allowed the Las Vegas fighter to dictate the action until the final bell. Scores were 99-90, 100-89 and 100-89, all for Jessica Rakoczy.”   In one of the first bouts of the evening the card featured an undercard four-rounder between Tania Gomez vs. Nicole Beard.  Cummings reported the following, “In the first female bout of the evening, lightweights Tania Gomez and Nicole Beard locked horns in an entertaining four-round battle with Gomez earning a unanimous decision. The southpaw Gomez landed consistently with her power shots throughout and had Beard’s nose bleeding steadily over the last two rounds. Beard came out strong at the opening bell, throwing combinations as she pressed her opponent. Tania, who had IFBA featherweight champion Kelsey Jeffries working her corner, used movement to avoid the rush and then began to work her way in with her own attack. A chopping left hand repeatedly found the mark as Gomez controlled the fight. Official scores were 39-37, 40-36, 39-37, all for Gomez.” Gomez is now 3-1-0, and Beard is 1-8. Also in attendance was Mia “The Knockout” St. JohnSt. John challenged Rakoczy for the IBA belt, and it looks like they will be fighting on April 15, 2004!

January 17, 2003 – Palace Indian Gaming Center, Lemoore, California
In front of a packed house of 1,500 boxing fans, with standing room only, Jenifer Alcorn, 133 ½, won a very close 10-round split decision over Jessica Rakoczy, 134 ¼, for the 135-lb lightweight IWBF World Title. Craig Ogawa who was ringside at the event reported to WBAN that Alcorn had received a cut on her forehead, from an apparent accidental headbutt, and had a nose bleed early in the rounds. There were no knockdowns, but the fight was "tremendous". In the Fresno Bee, staff writer Andy Boogaard wrote that Alcorn coming into the fight with a "soft" 14-0 record, remained unbeaten after her first bout against a "legitimate" foe. Boogaard reported that Rakoczy "howled in agony" not from Alcorn’s red gloves, but from the judges decision. Judge Ralph McKnight scored the fight 98-92 for Rakoczy., Marty Sammon and Terry Smith had it 96-94 and 98-92 for Alcorn. Alcorn is now 15-0-0, and Rakoczy suffered her first loss with 12-1.
