WBAN Record Member's NPEG/Photo gallery #289  Eliza Olson, 135,  defeated Jessica Rakoczy in a 10-round world title bout for the IBA and WBC lightweight title! In the ninth round, Olson knocked Rakoczy to the canvas. Final judges scores were 97-92, 97-92, and 98-91.

July 30, 2005 - Cobo Arena, in Detroit, Michigan
Mary Jo Sanders, 142,  remained undefeated when she fought Eliza Olson, 145, for the Interim WBC Welterweight title. Sanders won by a 10-round unanimous decision.  WBAN's Senior Editor, Brian Ackley wrote the following: DETROIT -- Although Mary Jo Sanders didn’t earn a million bucks for her win Saturday night, her Detroit fans sure thought she fought like it.  Sanders earned the WBC Interim Welterweight belt with a unanimous decision win over tough Elisa Olson to improve to 17-0 in her career. As expected, Sanders was the more efficient tactician, although she did absorb a few of Olson’s looping hooks which earned the California-based challenger the admiration of many in the Cobo Arena crowd of 3,000. All three judges saw it 98-92,97-93 and 96-94. Neither fighter was in any serious trouble in the fight. Olson was caught off balance and wobbled slightly in the third by a Sander’s hook, and Olson did some of her best work in the seventh, before tiring a bit in the final two rounds. Sanders’ best round might have been the 10th, making sure there were no hometown upsets on this night. “It feels like I fought my best but I’m in her hometown, if I can bring it to my hometown, the decision might change,” Olson (now 8-6-2) said after the fight. “I know I hit her, I stunned her, I cut her. But I didn’t probably throw enough punches. But I feel my performance was pretty good given the amount of time I had to train for this fight. I was told a month before, but it’s OK. She knows who I am. I know she’ll never fight me again because she’ll be scared. If she does want to fight me again, tell her to bring it. Maybe we’ll fight in Vegas or something. I’d be willing to do it again.”  The fight came off on the same night Christy Martin and Lucia Rijker were scheduled to fight for a $1 million in Las Vegas. It would have been the largest purse in women’s boxing history, but the fight was cancelled last week after Rijker tore her Achilles. It was Olson’s fifth crack a a title, but most of her fights have been on the road. She once called herself a “fighter on call”, having lost or drawn a number of close decisions in the backyards of several world champions.  Sanders stuck largely to her preflight plan with lots of movement and lots of jabs, and on occasion showed a brief willingness to mix it up, prompting chants of “Mary Jo” from her fans in the last two rounds.

December 10, 2004 - Masantucket, Connecticut
Report by Ken Castro:
For nearly a year, four-time junior welterweight world title challenger Eliza Olson lobbied for a rematch with former belt holder Jamie Clampitt.  Rough edges remained from their last matchup, a Clampitt razor-thin victory back in October of 2003. It came as no surprise then that Olson (San Francisco, CA) jumped at the chance to return east, to Foxwoods Casino and take another shot at Clampitt, this time for the vacant IWBF World Junior welterweight crown.  Friday's bout was hastened by the somewhat quick departure of scheduled Clampitt opponent, Jane Couch, who fell victim to a case of impetigo. In stepped Olson.  And true to form, the smoldering aversion that the two fighters have toward each other came to the forefront in their scheduled ten round faceoff.
Unfortunately, when the dust settled, the judge's scorecards left both corners, and a particularly large, vocal, group of ticket holders, wanting more.  "It makes my heart hurt," offered Olson (8-5-2) after the 96-94, 94-96, 95-95 draw. "I wanted the belt for Christmas. Clampitt (15-3, 5 KO's), who entered the post-fight meeting with reporters, clutching a bag of ice to her broken right hand, longed for the belt as well. "It was a tough fight, we have different styles and that made for an awkward fight," said Clampitt after the disappointing outcome. "I felt like I won the fight."  Full Story

Aga Rylik, now 15-1-0 (11KO) of Poland, won a 10-round unanimous decision over Eliza Olson, now 7-3-2 (2KO), of the United States, and won the WIBF Junior Welterweight title.   JollyDee's Report: The women boxers fought for both the  vacant WIBO Junior Welterweight world title and Rylik's WIBF junior welterweight title. The bout was qualitative and balanced as well. Rylik's jabs were dominating the match but the Olson was better in in close fighting and her uppercuts were very dangerous. At the beginning of the match,  Rylik was dominant,  however in the middle of the fight Olson, succeeded in taking charge. In the end Rylik was able to take on the match again because of her stamina. When the fight ended, both boxers believed to be the winner. On the cards Rylik was the victorious (98-94, 98-94, and 97-94) however in my opinion 97-94 was the most objective.

September 7, 2001 at the Raddisson Hotel, in Sacramento, California
Eliza Olson (granddaughter of Bo Bo Olson) wasted little time in going after her opponent, Robyn Covino.  According to Boxingtalk.net Ron Heard who covered the fight ringside, he said, "Eliza came out very hard and caught Covino with a nice left hook right in the middle of an exchange by the two ladies that sent Covino to the canvass at about 30 seconds into the first round. Covino got up and they went right back at it. Olson appeared to be confident and controlled the fight, over-powering Covino by throwing many combinations."  Ron went on to say, " Covino was game, she tried to trade back but she just was getting caught with clean hooks and she went down the second time at :58 seconds into the first round and it was over.   Clearly the best fight through the first four fights was the women."
