In the outdoor Amphitheatre, on an all-women's card, in "A Ring
of Their Own" boxing event, in the first fight of the night,
Shadina Pennybaker, had an outright war with
Daria Hill
of New Jersey, in six "tough" rounds of boxing. In what
could have been the best fight of the night (but as boxing fans
found out) all of the matches could have been classified as the best
fight of the night, Pennybaker won by a close unanimous decision. Both fighters not only displayed great skill, but very
good sportsmanship. Final judges scores 57-55, 56-55, 56-55. The second fight of the night was a six
rounder between Jeannine Garside, 130, of Windsor,
Canada and Rita Valentini, 125, of Hollywood, California.
The fight started out to be even, but it did not take long for
Garside to dominate the bout. Garside won by a fifth round
TKO, 1:25 seconds, Garside is a stellar example, why women
should try to learn their skills in the amateurs before turning pro.
She went to the body, throwing effective combinations, and as the
fight progressed she continued to put more pressure on Valentini.
In the third match, they had a special feature with
Elena "Baby Doll" Reid fighting a four-round exhibition against
Carina Moreno. Reid and Moreno were both warming up for
their world title bouts. Reid is fighting Regina Halmich in a
rematch on December 3, 2005, in Germany (WIBF belt), and Moreno will
be fighting Siriporn in Thailand (WBC belt). In a fourth
match, Laura "Lady Ram" Ramsey, 164, of Florida, fought
Sweden's Asa Sandell, 165. In the first round,
WBAN had Sandell ahead, as she was throwing crisp jabs, and had an
obvious height advantage. In the second round, Sandell began to have
a nose bleed, and had an accidental slip this round. In the sixth
round, Ramsey knocked Sandell to the canvas, with her taking an
eight count. Ramsey won the fight by a six-round split decision.
In the main event, Wendy Rodriguez, 105, won an eight-round unanimous
decision over Yvonne Caples, 105. The two mixed it up for eight
rounds, with Rodriguez out-pointing Caples. There were no
knockdowns in the bout. Arnie Rosenthal, and Ken Weiss, along
with matchmaker Wanda Bruce put on an excellent show, with great
matchups. Full

Isaiah Guzman, a sports reporter for the Santa Cruz
Sentinel wrote the following: Carina
Moreno, 23, 108 lbs., won a unanimous decision
(80-72) to improve to 7-0 as a pro while
Yvonne Caples, 32, 107,
dropped to 7-7-2. Moreno was originally scheduled to face
Julie Rubalcava (4-0) but Rubalcava backed out the week of
the fight due to an injury she sustained to her hand in a
fight the week before. The 109-pound bout was planned
to go six rounds but was lengthened to eight when several of
the men’s fights dropped out the day before. “It was
nothing,” Moreno said of going the extra two rounds. “I
didn’t really get tired.” Aside from a lump over her left
eye from a head butt, Moreno came out of what was supposed
to be the biggest test of her young pro-career virtually
unscathed. Moreno even dazed Caples in the seventh round
when she caught her with a good combination. “I’ve got
to calm down when I see an opponent hurt because I get a
little too excited,” Moreno said. Moreno fought from
the fourth round on with a hurt right hand. She wasn’t sure
how she hurt it but said she couldn’t throw it with as much
force from that point on. “(Trainer Rick Noble) said
forget about the pain just keep throwing and I kept on
throwing it,” Moreno said. Both Moreno and Noble were
ecstatic with the win over the more experienced, former
International Female Boxing Association world champion.
The final judges scores were 80-72 on all cards.

Maribel Ocasio-Soto in Salinas on Saturday night. Maribel was
overmatched and constantly held Carina throughout the fight.
Surprisingly the referee did not warn Maribel or deduct any points
for the constant holding! Carina landed her straight right almost at
will but there were no knockdowns. All three judges scored the fight
60-54 for Carina.

Carina Moreno, 111, of Watsonville, California, remained
undefeated, now 4-0-0 (2 KO) when she won by a six-round
unanimous decision over last-minute opponent, 23-year old
Stephanie
Dobbs, 110, of Moore, Oklahoma. In the Monterey
Herald, staff writer Dennis Taylor reported that it was a good
test for Moreno, as this was her first six-rounder fighting as
a pro. Taylor wrote, "Almost as satisfying as the
victory Saturday night was the fact that Watsonville's Carina
Moreno escaped her first-ever six-round fight with an unmarked
face -- imperative for a pro boxer who has another fight
scheduled just three weeks down the road." Taylor said that
Moreno survived a physical, occasionally rambunctious battle
with a "Warrior" named Stephanie Dobbs, winning with a
unanimous decision (60-53 all score cards. "Moreno stuck
her opponent repeatedly with a long left jab, peppered her
with effective combinations, and was given credit for a
knockdown just before the second-round bell."

Michelle no real opportunity to do any damage. Carina's ring
movement and combinations were too much for Gatewood. There
were no knockdowns but the referee, acting on the advice of
the doctor between rounds, stopped this bout 57 seconds into
round three. Carina stays undefeated and moves to 3-0 with 2
