Convention Center -
Washington, D.C. Report by
Longjab
Here at the new beautiful state of the art D.C. Convention
Center in it's inaugural sporting event, a fairly large crowd saw the 'Raging
Beauty' Isra Girgrah (129) win a tight, but controversial unanimous
decision over Melissa 'Honey Girl' Del Valle (132) over eight
rounds. The scorecards by the three judges were 78-74, 78-74, and 77-75.
The crowd’s response was not in agreement with the decision. This observer
had it 78-76, in favor of Del Valle. In a non-title match up, Del
Valle, coming in from Miami, started out quickly, wasting no time by going
on a relentless attack from the opening bell. She peppered Girgrah with
some heavy punches early and had the hometown favorite backing up during
the first two rounds. Girgrah, sensing the need to respond, returned
the favor in the third and had Del Valle on her ‘bicycle’ throughout most
of the round. In the fourth, the two female combatants
decided to mix it up more from the inside and equally traded punches in
what looked like an even round. Then, in the fifth,
Del Valle went to more of a ‘cut and dance’ approach and out slicked the
flatfooted Girgrah, by moving away when Girgrah attempted to counter Del
Valle’s quicker punches. There were a few holds here and there, but for
the most part a clean round that went to the slick and flashy Del Valle.
The sixth round was another close encounters round where
Girgrah attempted to slow Del Valle down by holding a little and punching
more before the referee ordered them to break. The round was even. In
the seventh, Girgrah went on the offensive and stalked a dancing
Del Valle, who worked off the ropes and tried to frustrate Girgrah,
sensing that she needed the round. Girgrah landed the more effective
punches and took the round. Then, in the eighth and final
round, both ladies went toe to toe but Del Valle seemed to have
more bounce and dance in her feet and fought off the ropes more toward the
end in order to preserve what was perceived as a narrow lead and took the
round in my opinion, but the decision went the other way in the final
outcome, with Girgrah, the hometown favorite, getting the decision while
the fans were vocally not in favor of the decision. Some members of
the audience thought that Del Valle was the better of the two fighters and
should have won the decision.

Irsa Girgrah, now 26-3-2,Washington, D.C., defeated
Trish "TNT" Hill, now 5-3, Atlanta, with an eight-round
unanimous decision. News sources reported that Girgrah
went down in the second round, but went on to dominate the
latter stages of the fight. Final judges scores was
77-75, 76-75, 76-75.
April 18,
2003 - The Palace, Lemoore, CA
In front of a packed audience, at the
Palace
Indian
Gaming
Center,
in Lemoore, California, had a night of women’s boxing, mixed in
with a heavyweight contender Michael Grant, who fought Gilbert
Martinez. The first fight of the night was between Isra “The
Raging Beauty” Girgrah, 128, and Laura Serrano, 124. The two
fought in a toe-to-toe battle that ended in a controversial
eight-round split decision for Girgrah. The
boxing fans met the decision with a loud sound of “boos.” Serrano,
took the Mexico flag and ran through the audience after the decision was
announced. Girgrah delivered Serrano her first loss as a pro boxer. Final scoring was 79-73
Serrano, and 77-75, and 78-74 Girgrah. The second bout of the evening was featured Sumya
“The Island Girl” Anani, 141, and Fredia “The Cheetah” Gibbs,
140.
Even before the fight began, Anani stared across the ring at
Gibbs, and shuffling her feet as if she was ready to spring in
action at the ring of the bell. Gibbs was also hyped and when
the bell did begin the first round both boxers immediately began
throwing leather. There was some holding throughout the first
round, and they were non-stop until the end of that round. But
it was learned shortly there after that Gibbs may have
experienced a fractured hand and the fight was halted. Anani
won the fight by a TKO. The third night of the fight featured
Grant and
Martinez.
Their fight ended in a win for Grant by a TKO in the later
rounds. Then the ESPN2 cameras stopped rolling as the next
women’s match was to take place between Nina Ahlin,
101.5, and
Vaia Zaganas, 104. It was a very entertaining fight and it was
unfortunate that it did not make television. WBAN did tape the
fight. Vaia Zaganas wond the fight with a final scoring of
59-55, 59-55, and 58-56. The last fight of the night was another
women’s match, that could have easily been named the “fight of
the night.” Layla McCarter, 134, of Las Vegas, took on local
boxer from Fresno, Lisa Lewis, 133. It was the classic boxer
against puncher. McCarter was slick as she slipped punches by
Lewis who is also one tough fighter! The six-rounder ended in a
unanimous decision for McCarter.

February 28, 2002 - Baltimore, Maryland
Before
a banquet crowd in The International Room of The Baltimore Wyndham Hotel, Isra
"Raging Beauty" Girgrah won a ten-round split decision and
retained her UBA Junior lightweight belt over a very game and gracious Tracy
'The Lady' Byrd. After a rather even two rounds of competitive action,
Girgrah opened things up a little when she landed a good right on Byrd
that dropped her to the canvas. However, the Byrd, who proved to be
a tough opponent got up to take a standing eight count. From then on,
though, it seemed to this observer that Byrd got rather busy the rest of
the fight, pressing most of the action by trying to bang with Girgrah from
the inside while Girgrah was boxing her way through the fight with rather
clean shots from the outside. Byrd did some roughing up of Girgrah from
the inside and managed to rock Girgrah with a few rights of her own, but
never managed to knock Girgrah to the canvas. The scorecards were 97-92,
92-96, & 97-92 in favor of Girgrah. The judges were not all looking at
the same fight. This one had rematch written all over it.
June 1,

Sands Hotel and Casino,
Atlantic City, New Jersey
Isra Girgrah, 128, won a 10-round unanimous decision over Snodene
Blakeney, 130, for the vacant IWBF Junior lightweight title. In the
Atlantic City Press, reporter Guy Gargan wrote: "Female
boxer Isra Girgrah entered the ring Friday at the Sands Casino Hotel with
her entourage carrying her two championship belts. World heavyweight
champion Hasim Rahman, her friend and co-trainee at the Round 1 Gym in
Baltimore, Md., was carrying one of them. After all this fanfare, it
wasn’t an easy night for Girgrah, but she left the ring a little less than
an hour later wearing a third belt. Using ring generalship, Girgrah
came on to outpoint brawling Snodene Blakeney of Austin, Tex., over 10
rounds. She won the vacant Women’s International Boxing Federation
junior-lightweight championship. Girgrah, 128-pounds, improved to 18-3, with
eight knockouts. Blakeney, who weighed in at the junior-lightweight limit of
130 pounds, ignored her underdog role and flailed away with both hands as
the bout began. She never let up, but Girgrah found the range from the
fourth round on, and generally landed better punches. Judge John Reilly and
Luis Rivera both scored it 97-93 for Girgrah, and judge Alan Rubinstein had
it 97-94. The Press scored it 98-95 for Girgrah. Full fight report

On January 12,
2001, Irsa Girgrah, 133, faced Sue Mullett, 134, in a scheduled 10-rounder
for the UBA (Universal Boxing Association) title, that ended in a TKO :22
in the fourth round! As one news source reported, Isra Girgrah
(16-3-2, 8 KOs) made good on her preflight prediction by stopping Susan
Mullett (7-6) with a fourth-round TKO. Girgrah dropped Mullett to
the canvas with a straight right at the end of the third round, then
started the fourth with a combination of punches, that pinned Mullett on
the ropes. The referee intervened and stopped the fight.
Girgrah did not wear her traditional boxing trunks, and came donning in
the ring a red skirt with black tights. Apparently the skirt was so tight
that Girgrah's corner had to rip the seams on both sides after the first
round to give her more freedom to move!

Harbor hotel tonight to
demonstrate that she has the knockout power to match her knockout looks.
The holder of three world boxing titles will carry an 18-2-3 record with
nine knockouts into the ring in putting her Universal Boxing Association
lightweight (135 pounds) title on the line against Tracy "The
